The engine oil pumps for BMW M50, M50TU and M52 are no longer available from BMW. You will quickly realise that when you plan to rebuild your engine but find no OE or aftermarket availability. Several versions of this oil pump circulate online but most of those are used oil pumps with significant wear as they are 30+ years old. E36 enthusiasts have very limited options to resurrect an old oil pump. The gerotor set is still available from BMW but not the oil pump assembly itself. The bad news is that what usually causes the loss of oil pressure or low oil pressure in these pumps is not the still available rotor set.

Causes of low oil pressure:

* The pressure relief valve has significant wear. This can be on both the piston itself and the relief piston aluminium bore. (Partially serviceable as the piston is still available from BMW.)
* The gerotor aluminium bore has scratches. This is usually caused by a lack of oil changes. Debris sucked up from the sump can get stuck between the rotors and their housing. This can permanently damage the aluminium housing.

In both cases above what causes the main problem is that the main aluminium housing cannot be changed or serviced. Changing the rotor set and the pressure relief piston will not always solve the problem of the worn, damaged aluminium bores.

Known issues with the M50, M52 oil pumps:

* The weak oil pump drive shaft is a well documented problem. The spline shaft can wear out in the shaft causing an immediate loss of oil pressure. Performance upgrades are available online. You can buy an upgraded shaft for a hefty price.
* Compatibility issues. BMW changed the oil pumps' design and mounting between 1990 and 1998. They also changed the gerotor thickness (flow rate) in those 8 years of production. The low flow oil pumps have been fitted on M50 and M50TU engines with the thinnest gerotor sets. Later in 1994 they introduced the M52 (non-vanos) engines with a thicker gerotor set.

The M52 engines with a thicker gerotor set had 2 versions.

* Cast iron M52 blocks: Oil pump with a thicker gerotor set, larger oil galleries, metal parts
* Aluminium M52 blocks: Oil pump with a thicker gerotor set, smaller oil galleries, plastic parts (mounting position is different from that on a cast iron block)

If you want to fit an oil pump off an aluminium M52 block to a cast iron M52 block then you will likely need to reslot the oil pump mounting in order to fit it.
Please keep in mind that our pump will not fit the M52TU engines!

Here at Zedperformance.co.uk we develop parts for the aftermarket.  We decided to design and manufacture an improved version of these M50 & M52 oil pumps that resolves all problems with all circulating versions of these pumps.

What our upgraded oil pump design covers:

* Improved metal pressure relief valve piston. (A longer piston head is less prone to wear.)
* Fits ALL M50, M50TU and M52 engines. (No need to reslot the mounting hole.)
* Thicker gerotor set compared to the OE rotor sets resulting in an increased flow rate.
* Thicker shaft design to support high rev engines along with reducing the shaft's weight. (Shaft diameter has been increased from 15mm to 16mm.)
* Inferior spline sprocket to shaft design has been changed to a double D fitment using a left hand bolt with securing wires.
* Lightweight sprocket compared to the stock sprocket.

Compatibility:

* M50
* M50TU
* M52
